Or should we even be calling these ‘concerts’? Is it a misnomer, or does it still apply? Either way, it’s up and…semi-comprehensive. I’ll be updating it as soon as I catch wind of events (if you know of any, send em our way!) The crown jewel, of course, is Coachella, for which we (probably one from each of us) will do a lengthy write-up. You’ll be getting perspective from both a seasoned, 3-year vet (myself) and a 1st year newcomer (Misha), so be sure to keep tabs on ze blog for some enlightening posts on one of the best music festivals in the world.
They're Back
The Brothers are Back
My main guys. If you had the privilege of seeing their masterclass DJ set at last year’s Coachella, you were one of the lucky few who got the first listen of their new track “Escape Velocity“. The 12 minute opus is a building, psychedelic, dancefloor monster, and is one of the best EDM tracks to hit airwaves in a long time. The track is one of 8 from their upcoming LP “Further” slated to drop on June 8th, which will include videos meant to sync up with each track. The brothers Chemical also have a busy 2010 in store, with lives dates at the Roundhouse in London, Sonar Festival in Barcelona (I’ll be fuckin there!), Exit Festival in Serbia, the Hollywood Bowl (August 29th…I’ll be there as well), and Electric Zoo in New York (September 4th).
Daft Punk and their magnificent flashing pyramid get all the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, but in my humble opinion, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons are THE innovators of electronic music. Their Beatles-esque journey has made stops at breakbeat (or ‘big beat’, if you will), hip hop, commercially viable house, gritty techno, and ambient. Their live shows are beautiful displays of heartwrenching sounds and ancestral imagery. Even with the low points of Push the Button and We Are the Night, they still managed to break new ground and test the limits of music and technology (and can we blame them for dipping their toes in the mainstream?). In the end, nobody compares. They -are- electronic music. Wow…I’m gushing. Do not miss their live show this year!
