Oh no girl. Oh no you di-en’t.

Folks, February 1st to February 5th you can buy a ticket to see Gareth Emery at Circus for only 10$! That is a steal and a half considering he is #9 on the DJ Mag Top 100 and, of course, responsible for a ton of amazing tracks.

If you haven’t heard of Gareth Emery, let me give you t3h scoop:

Gareth describes himself on Twitter as someone who plays and makes simple but effective electronic music. Now, I don’t know much about music production but I would say his music is nothing but simple. It is complex, intertwining melodic synths, backing basslines, and beats into a techy, progressive sound. If you listen to A State of Trance, Global DJ Broadcast, or go to see a trance DJ at any event, it is very likely that you will hear a Gareth Emery song (even if you listen to a DJ Slava mix :D ). His tracks tend to be played more toward the beginning, to build it up and get the audience into the groove. A great example of this would be Simon Patterson’s essential mix, which drops Gareth’s track only minutes before diving into an intense, high-bpm tech-trance frenzy (highly suggest checking out this essential mix by the way).

Gareth Emery is highly ranked and highly acclaimed because his music can fit in many different DJ’s sets in many different places. He just recently started his own label, Garuda, last year and has already begun supporting and releasing some amazing tracks. He really does have a “sound”, which I suppose is a must for someone in the top 10 DJ Mag, but to describe his sound is, as always, very difficult. I suppose I would tack him as melodic, progressive trance. Sounds cookie cutter but believe me, it’s not.

He’s coming to us from Manchester; Rob and I met him a year ago, back when I had my Pierre mustache (unfortunately I just can’t grow hair in the middle part so I am not destined to have a manly mustache). Gareth opened for Markus Schulz in January of 2009 at Vanguard and threw down a great set even though the music stopped for some reason 20 min before his set ended, which is usually the peak of a DJ set. Gareth took it in stride and proceeded to get tanked after his set, meeting fans and talking to us. He was very friendly and is a great guy. I would expect nothing less at Circus.

By now you’re probably saying “bla bla bla get to the music”, and so I shall. Here are a couple of my favorite Gareth Emery tracks. Expect to hear these classic Emery tracks as well as newer material and tracks from the Sound of Garuda compilation Gareth put out just before 2009 ended.

Gareth Emery – Exposure – this track is one of his more upbeat releases and is often dropped to raise the intensity of a set. I’ve heard numerous tech DJs whip this one out at the peak of the night, including Sander van Doorn and Eddie Halliwell. What I find humorous is that although it’s a pretty intense song, it’s got a nice happy British melody that seems quite lighthearted if you separate it out from the rest (see: 3 min mark).

Gareth Emery vs. Above & Beyond – On a Good Metropolis Day (Myon & Shane54 Mashup) – much to my dismay, this track has never been publicly released (as far as I know). However it is an absolutely fantastic, melodic, progressive, uplifting track. This was dropped by Armin at Monster Massive and Markus Schulz at TAO, so you may have jammed to this one before!

M.I.K.E. – Sunrise at Palamos (Gareth Emery Remix) – now this is one of those build up, progressive tracks that I was talking about. It’s got a little bit more of a melodic beachy flow with minor notes. It’s one of Gareth Emery’s latest remixes; they are all really top notch however. When I see a new Gareth Emery remix on a DJ’s setlist I get excited because his remix work is some of the best out there.

Well, that’s all folks. Hope to see you at Circus on March 6th for Gareth Emery, and again remember that tickets are only 10 bucks for another 2 days!
