Damon Albarn isn’t wasting any time im 2010. The Blur frontman’s popular electronica/hip hop/nu funk/alternative rock/stop me now/before I list off/more genres outfit Gorillaz is finally back with their highly anticipated follow-up to the phenomenal Demon Days. The name of the album is “Plastic Beach” and is set to drop on March 9th. A little window into Mr. Albarn’s new world: “The band have taken up residence, recording on a secret floating island deep in the South Pacific, a Plastic Beach HQ, made up of the detritus, debris and washed up remnants of humanity. This Plastic Beach is the furthest point from any landmass on Earth; the most deserted spot on the planet.” Oh Damon, what a joyously eccentric, yet profound, storyteller you are.
News of the album’s release date arrived on the heels of the Coachella lineup announcement, which boasts the Gorillaz debuting their album with a live performance (their first on US soil since 2006) on the last day of the festival. I expect the performance to be nothing short of beautiful, and if the recently leaked, achingly soulful new single “Stylo” is any indication, the album should be no slouch as well. Much like Demon Days, PB is chock full of guest stars: Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, and Mick Jones/Paul Simonon of The Clash, to name a few.
Consider my hopes up.
