I hope you all had a wonderful, gluttonous Thanksgiving. For those of you who stuffed yourselves silly, you’ll be glad to know that I discovered a great way to work off unwanted holiday pounds that doesn’t involve running on a treadmill for hours. This may surprise you…but dancing actually burns calories. Amazing, right? No need to thank me. Coincidentally, there are two neat events coming down the pike these next few weeks to help you get your feet moving and whip you back into shape.
Hands Up LA! takes this Saturday (December 5th) at Circus Disco from 9PM-4AM, and will feature the likes of Eddie Halliwell, Marcus Schossow, Hatiras, Alex Kenji, and DJ Reza. I’m curious to see how this event pans out, since it’s relatively grassroots and doesn’t have notoriety of the Insomniac or HARD events. I feel like we should be supporting an event like this based on principle alone. After all, two-party systems don’t work! As for the talent, Halliwell (I’m assuming he needs no introduction!) and his hard, trancy, techy beats are understandably getting all the press, but the guy you shouldn’t miss is Hatiras. I guarantee you that his signature dirty, bleepy electro sound will make you sweat. He’s collaborated with the likes of Laidback Luke, MC Flipside, and Jelo, and has been a mainstay in the Beatport top 10 charts with tracks like Speakerhumper, Autograph, and the monumental Digital Doom 2010. I think this might be his first LA performance, so don’t miss it! Misha and I will both be there, so come say hi! We’ll be the tall, drunk, dancing white kids.
The other event is Grooveradio’s annual Holiday Groove party, which goes down next Wednesday (December 9th) from 8PM-2AM. It’s a unique party in that LA’s finest DJs will be throwing down short 15-30 minute sets throughout the night. The vibe is laid back and festive, and entrance is free as long as you get yourself on one of the guest lists (Chemistry and Superstars VIP both have one going, I believe). Did I mention that the lineup is awesome? The Crystal Method, DJ Dan, Tommy Lee & DJ Aero, Dave Dresden, Swedish Egil, and Charles Feelgood are among the DJs set to rock the place. There will also be a side electro room featuring up-and-coming DJs (and friends of mine) like Sam Hiller and Religion. Don’t let the casual nature of the event fool you, this will be a proper party.
I’ll leave you with this track, a rework of Gorillaz’ Dirty Harry. Not house, I know, but it’s my jam, and it’s groovy as all hell. Enjoy!
