Looks like the Together as One lineup is coming together slowly but surely.
The newest addition is Marcus Schossow, who rose to fame about 2 years go with his track Mr. White.
He is also known for having a little feud with Deadmau5. If you have time to kill, you can read all about it on this thread, myspace, and wikipedia. Deadrat6… Marcus Fatsow… feuds are funny! What’s even funnier is that the Deadrat6 tracks are actually pretty good (see Youtube) so in mocking Deadmau5 some good productions were released. Huh? According to their posts on the trancenu forums they are over it but in reality who knows what happened?
To me, his style/genre is one of the hardest to pinpoint. In fact, I always want to include one of his tracks in my mixes but I find it really hard to figure out how to get it in there. That is, in my opinion, a good thing – it means he has a distinct style and it will make a live set from him more interesting because he (I’m assuming) will be a little less likely to play a stereotypical set.
But if I were to try to label his style I guess I would go with progressive/tech trance…
But what is progressive anyway? Rob and I were just talking the other day about the word progressive and how it’s used to label many different tracks but is really hard to pinpoint. After all, all songs have a “progression”… I think of progressive songs as those which start out kinda mellow, minimal, then slowly build up into more and more instead of a typical electronic song which doesn’t hold out on the chorus from the get-go. But that means that there can be progressive house, trance, electro, whatever.
For example, if we take Beatport as the authority on labeling, Eric Prydz, Deadmau5, and Sander van Doorn all have Progressive House associations. Ahh! Labeling electronic music is quite a challenge. Sucks for the Beatport labeler person. I hope he/she gets paid well for all the dress he/she has to endure.
But anyway, the real reason I wrote this article is because Rob and I are going to Hands Up LA! in December to see Marcus Schossow as well as Eddie Halliwell, Reza, and others. (Schossow and Eddie are playing at the “House of Gods” stage. Could it get any more epic?) The event will take place at Circus Disco (which I already have an affinity for) so go get your tickets! This event fills the small void between Monster Massive and TAO and I hope to see more big events at Circus, which is a venue far bigger than Avalon or Vanguard.
Party on! Here’s another video of Schossow opening for Tiesto:
