PERSPECTIVES Episode 034 (Part 2) – Darin Epsilon [Oct 2009] by darinepsilon

This week’s guest mix comes from another DJ who has already gained quite a following (the “other” would be our last guest mixer Thee-O). Darin Epsilon is a progressive house DJ who, while based in Los Angeles, is already amassing a global following. If you don’t believe me check out the visitor list in the right hand column of his website darinepsilon.com – the visitors before me, for example, came from Spain, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Sweden and Hungary (wow… EDM is really taking off in Eastern Europe isn’t it?).

Darin is formerly from Chicago and now lives in the Hollywood area where he is able to release productions and remixes while playing at LA’s top clubs as well as make a few trips around the world as well. All in a day’s work for a rising DJ. The move to LA has allowed him to increase his network and continue spreading his sound but of course he is hungry for more.

Darin’s style can be described as more mellow, steady, progressive house. If you turn the bass up you can really feel it moving underneath the soft synths. It can really lead to some amazing buildups while maintaining a unique continuity. Darin’s mixes tend to go up in tempo and sound but not as much as a set from a trance DJ for example, who often raises his BPM by as much as 10 throughout a set, going completely nuts by the end of it. You also won’t hear any ridiculous 3 minute breakdowns – this music will keep you moving. You can definitely get a feeling for the full breadth of Darin’s style through his soundcloud – he’s got live mixes as well as his radio show, Perspectives posted on there. Also check out Beatport for some of his tracks, one of which has already been as high as #25 on the charts. Quite an accomplishment!

As far as influences go, here is what Darin had to say about what or who inspired him to get into house music

The list of influences is huge, but I got bit by the DJing bug after hearing live DJ sets on WNUR FM at Northwestern University.  Ferry Corsten ‘Ministry of Sound’ and Paul Oakenfold ‘Tranceport’ discs were also big influences, as well as bands on the radio like Prodigy, Underworld, and Crystal Method.

Like most of us, I’m sure, Darin was influenced by the greats and is now working hard to get up there himself. He has already found himself collaborating with artists such as D:Fuse and being featured on Paul Oakenfold’s label Perfecto as well as his Perfecto Vegas compilation. It must feel great to get your music recognized by one of the DJs who inspired you to get into the genre in the first place.

It’s always great to hear about those DJs who you see on bills around Hollywood but don’t know their story. Like all DJs, Darin works hard to get his story out there and share his musical vision with the people. Besides hosting his own radio show called “Perspectives” (which you can hear in the mix above), Darin also promotes for Monday Night Social at Playhouse in Hollywood which has big names  including Morgan Page, Seb Fontaine, and the newly formed Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Christopher Lawrence and wife) on the bill for this month. Not bad.

But that’s not all…

You might be surprised to hear that you will be hearing Darin’s music live sooner than you think! Darin is opening for Fedde Le Grand at Giant Vanguard in Hollywood on December 12th. Now, you already knew what to expect from FLG – an awesome house set akin to what he already threw down at EDC (which was his favorite Gig of 2009). But now you can be happy knowing that you will also have an idea what to expect from the opener – Darin Epsilon. So get excited! Get stoked! And go support the local LA talent!

Lastly, as a special treat Darin has shared one of his most recent productions with us – check out Maxi Valvona – Revole (Darin Epsilon Remix).
