By this point a BeatCo reader might ask… will these guys ever say “Boo, don’t go see DJ _____, he’s terrible!”? Haha, why, the answer, of course, is no. I love this stuff.
By the way I, like most EDM lovers, believe in giving everyone a chance. I certainly won’t ride on the coattails of a DJ for long if he/she gives a lackluster performance, which has happened in the past, but not often.
Now that we got the obvious out of the way, let’s see what’s going on this weekend in LA. I guess the real question is… what’s NOT going on.
The lineups are the following:
1. Avalon – Roger Sanchez “Release Yourself” Tour
2. Vanguard – Gareth Emery, Menno DeJong, and Kristina Sky
3. Circus – Marco V
and last but not least there’s a rave called “Murder the Dance Floor” out in San Bernardino ft. Benji Madden on the decks… although he doesn’t appear in the time schedule in the event description. Will his name draw a crowd? I certainly hope not. Click “Read More” if you want to get a little preview of any of the events.
1. Roger Sanchez
Not to be confused with Junior Sanchez, who somehow makes it onto almost every massive LA lineup, Roger Sanchez has been a legend in the house scene for quite some time and this year made quite a move by locating himself on the Terrace on Armada Night at Amnesia in Ibiza. This is (arguably) the world’s most famous club, and playing the terrace which is equal if not larger in size than the main stage at the club on the same night as the #1 DJ in the world (Armin van Buuren headlines Armada every Tuesday) is surely a good move for Sanchez.
Roger Sanchez plays some hard-hitting house using lots of DJ effects and tricks, so that will make him a shoe-in for the house of Avalon. For a little preview check out this youtube video of him in Ibiza.
2. Gareth Emery and Menno DeJong
This is an all-out trance line-up at Vanguard, so you know I’m interested.
Gareth Emery is an up-and-comer in the DJ realm. His DJMag rank is in the 20′s, he just started his own label, and his latest track releases have been amazing. He is definitely developing his own style of a cross between progressive and tech trance (among other styles) so expect a great set from him. The last time he played at Vanguard was when he opened for Markus Schulz. He was drunk and very happy when I met him.
As far as Menno DeJong, he is a young Dutch trance DJ who is just starting out in the US market. Expect banging, uplifting tracks from him. I have not heard him play live but based on his radio show (called Intuition), I would expect your average trance set building up from progressive tracks all the way to trance bangers. Nothing too exciting but perhaps I will be proved wrong. Please comment if this is the case!
The gentlemen will be joined by female DJ Kristina Sky who, based on her association with Connecticut’s Randy Boyer and set tracklists on her website, will be comin out hard at a very fast BPM a-la John O’Callaghan or Sean Tyas. The female DJs in trance are not to be messed with!
3. Marco V
Marco V is a legend in the DJ realm. Entering the scene before the year 2000, he had been off the radar for the past couple of years until he came out with his new album titled “Propaganda Pt. 1″. He is very much a progressive DJ whose style is hard to pinpoint, but for the purposes of this post I would expect him to play progressive/tech trance (he is, after all, playing at Circus). Expect to hear lots of tracks from his new album, for example his huge hit Unprepared, which is a great example of his ability to cross genres.
For a recent interview with Marco V, click here.
If you’re going to Circus, head on over to their MySpace page. They have a flyer you can print out for a discount at the door. Not a bad deal, but you have to get there early. Then again, staying awake to hear some awesome trance should never be a problem for anyone.
4. Murder the Dancefloor
Not much to say about this event. An underground rave in San Bernardino – for those going or thinking about going, I think you know what to expect. I just thought it was funny that Benji Madden is on the bill. What’s with all these random actors/musicians being DJs (like Pedro?!)? I wonder if they’re any good…
Final Decision
Which event would I attend? I gotta say, although I always praise Circus for its great venue and dedication to trance, in this case Vanguard inches ahead with their younger trance line-up. Bringing a legend like Marco V to LA is also important, however, so it is only a few of those smaller, shorter inches that Vanguard has over Circus in this situation.

This blog is awesome. Rob and I are both enjoying it immensely. Are you? Drop a line in the comments box so we can all discuss our excitement or interest in the scene. Or maybe you can finally release that deep hatred you’ve been holding in against me.
Also, Rob promised us a mix but never delivered. Shame.
Yours truly,
