It’s getting way too hard to keep track of all these California massives. Forget monthly, this shit is becoming weekly. Last week was the Nocturnal Festival (I’m told Laidback Luke absolutely stole the show. The guy’s hip-hop oriented sound meshes perfectly with the Cali dance vibe, doesn’t it?) and this weekend we have LovEvolution, a free, sprawling parade of your favorite DJs on large floats roaming the streets of Downtown San Francisco. The proceedings were formerly known as “Lovefest”, but due to some copyright trouble with the folks in charge of the LA/Hawaii/Vegas-based Love Festival, the Skills/Spundae crew took the low road and adopted the “LovEvolution” moniker. It truly is Haight & Ashbury gone rave.

Sounds fun, huh? It gets better. For many people, the real attraction is the afterparty, which takes place at the Bill Graham Civic Center and will boast the likes of Canadian wonderkid Deadmau5, dance music mainstays Groove Armada (DJ set), Fischerspooner (DJ set), DJ Dan + Donald Glaude, and Eddie Halliwell. Misha will surely disagree, but it’s good to see house music taking center stage while trance (John O’Callaghan, Andy Moor, etc) gets relegated to the sideroom. One thing we do agree on, however, is the overall efficiency and good vibes of the event itself. We attended last year’s installment and had nothing short a wonderful, positive experience. While it was still a crowded affair, it was nowhere near the sardine-can treatment you get at the absurdly overcrowded LA massives like EDC and Monster Massive. In short, our friends up north know how to put on a good rave. Unfortunately, neither of us will be able to attend due to…well…real life bullshit. You, on the other hand, should go! Do it!
